Oklahoma City, OK

Another one of our favorite places in the entire world, or at least the Midwest, is Oklahoma City.  There is so much to talk about when you’re talking OKC, so let’s hit some highlights.

Not only is OKC the largest city in Oklahoma, it is also the State Capitol.  The metro area hosts a population of 1,396,445 according to the 2020 census.

Oklahoma City is known as a “Wild West” town and is still home to one of the world’s largest livestock markets.  Formally settled in 1889 when the “Unassigned Lands” were opened for settlement, OKC became part of the Great Land Run, doubling in size between 1890-1900.  Today, oil, natural gas and related industries are the largest economic industries.

No mention of Oklahoma City can be complete without honoring the lives lost as a result of the largest domestic terrorist event in American history, when a bomb went off in front of the Murrah building.  A beautiful memorial now stands in homage to the innocence lost.

Things To Do in OKC

We like to share our personal thoughts and favorite places with you.  Our top 3 list of things to do with the family when visiting Oklahoma City are:

  1. Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum.  You’re right if you think that isn’t “fun”.  It is a sobering testimonial to the violence that occurred and the reaction to it, both at the local as well as national grassroots level.  Seeing each of the chairs left empty never fails to stir deep into the soul.
  2. National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. Touted as America’s premier institution of Western history, art and culture, the museum was founded in 1955.  The stated mission is the collection, preservation and exhibition of the finest Western art and artifacts.
  3. Zoo and Botanical Garden. Featuring animals from all over the world, with a special emphasis on those local to the Oklahoma area.  One of our favorite features is the “Go Behind the Scenes” program that allows small groups to get up close and personal with grizzly bears, Galapagos tortoises, rhinos, buffalo, sea lions and Asian elephants. Very cool stuff, indeed.
